Bananas are a very versatile fruit that can be found everywhere. They taste good, can be carried and eaten nearly anywhere, and are high in energy and nutrients. They're also high in fiber and potassium which make bananas a great choice for a healthy lifestyle.

What Is A Food Allergy?

Some people can have an allergic reaction or intolerance to bananas which causes unwanted reactions. Symptoms happen because your body reacts to the banana as an invader. Chemicals are released into your system and they manifest themselves as allergic reactions.

Banana allergy symptoms vary from person to person and can display themselves in a variety of ways. We first need to define what the differences are between a real allergy and an intolerance.

Banana Allergy

Only about 0.5% - 1% of people have an actual allergy to bananas. These symptoms can manifest themselves within a few minutes (most of the time) to a few hours after eating a banana. Here's a short list of banana food allergy symptoms to get you pointed in the right direction:

  • Coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Itchy Throat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Swollen lips and tongue
  • Itching
  • Rash
  • Hives
  • Swelling and inflammation of other parts of the body
  • Stomach cramps
  • Fever

In severe cases the victim can get Anaphylaxis shock which is very dangerous.

It's a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate medical attention. Many times those that are susceptible to Anaphylaxis shock will carry epinephrine, sometimes called an EpiPen. This gives the person a shot of adrenaline and offers enough time to get him to the emergency room. Anaphylaxis symptoms can include:

  • Difficulty in breathing. The victim may have a swollen throat or airway making it difficult to breathe.
  • Stomach pain
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Severe drop in blood pressure
  • Lightheadedness
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Facial flush

What Is Banana Intolerance?

Intolerance is a bit more difficult to nail down because symptoms may not be immediate. It may take several hours before you have any kind of reaction which makes it harder to pinpoint the real issue. Some symptoms may be attributed to other foods. These symptoms can include:

  • Bloating
  • Gas
  • Stomach pain and cramps
  • Headaches
  • Rashes

The word "Banana" must be on the label if the food product is regulated by the FDA. You might be able to introduce a small amount of bananas if you're intolerant, but again, check with your doctor or allergist before adding any bananas back into your diet.

Some foods that may contain bananas are:

  • Baby Food
  • Bread
  • Cakes
  • Certain protein shakes
  • Cookies
  • Eggnog
  • Energy and/or protein bars
  • French Toast (restaurants)
  • Fruit salad
  • Granola
  • Guacamole
  • Muffins
  • Pancakes
  • Pastries
  • Pies
  • Puddings
  • Tarts

These kinds of food allergy symptoms can be potentially life threatening due to Anaphylactic shock so it's best to get professional help. The doctor, allergist, or chiropractor can perform a series of tests to determine the root cause of the allergy and treat it accordingly.
