Cinnamon has been used as a flavor enhancer in cooking for years. There's no escaping the sweet cinnamon aroma when you walk into a bakery. However, not everyone is that lucky. Many people suffer from allergy symptoms. They can vary from person to person and range from light and annoying to sometimes life threatening.

Allergy symptoms in children and adults can manifest themselves within a few minutes to a few hours after a person consumes cinnamon or certain kinds of food that may contain cinnamon or cinnamon extract.

This is because your body is going into hyper drive. It views the allergen as a threat and will try to protect itself against this threat anyway it can. You body will pump out histamines and other chemicals to fight the alleged invader.

The most common symptoms of cinnamon allergy can include:

  • Runny nose
  • Red watery eyes
  • Shortness of breath or breathing difficulties
  • Swelling of the lips and/or tongue
  • Nausea  
  • Vomiting
  • Upset stomach and/or stomach aches
  • Facial swelling
  • Skin rashes
  • Skin dermatitis (when you only come into contact with cinnamon)

One of the worst cinnamon side effects is Anaphylaxis shock which is very dangerous. It's a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate medical attention. Many times parents of allergic children will carry epinephrine, sometimes called an Epi Pen. This gives the person a shot of adrenaline and offers enough time to get him to the emergency room. Anaphylaxis symptoms can include:

  • Difficulty in breathing. The victim may have a swollen throat or airway making it difficult to breathe.
  • Facial flush
  • Lightheaded 
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Severe drop in blood pressure
  • Stomach pain

Cinnamon Allergy Symptoms In Children

One of the most common symptoms in younger children is skin dermatitis. This can happen when children come into direct contact with cinnamon. Many times simply washing the affected with soap and water can can solve the problem. However, if no symptoms appear on the skin you can look for the following:

  • Irritability 
  • Fussy
  • Agitated
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach aches 
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Congestion
  • Wheezing
  • Coughing
  • Runny nose
  • Red watery eyes

Ceylon Cinnamon and Cassia Cinnamon

The two main kinds of cinnamon are Ceylon and Cassia. The differences are subtle, but noticeable when you know what to look for. In powder form, you can't tell the difference. They're a little easier to distinguish in stick form. Ceylon tends to be a little more expensive and woven in a tighter stick formation. It's a lighter color and doesn't give you such a cinnamon punch.

Cassia is a little darker and richer in flavor. The stick body is a little thicker and there's a noticeable roll.
